The Thorn

By Debra | October 22, 2009

This year has brought the greatest blessings I’ve ever known but not without some of the greatest pains I’ve ever had to endure.  My skin has been completely removed time and time again revealing some very painful insights into who I am and who I am not.  God has melted me down and purged me so that I may know the depth of His love and grace in my life.

I am currently reading “A Steadfast Heart” by Elyse Fitzpatrick and wanted to share a poem that she shares in her book.

A Steadfast Heart: Experiencing God’s Comfort in Life’s Storms [With CD]

The Thorn
by Martha Snell Nicholson

I stood a mendicant [beggar] of God
before His royal throne
And begged Him for a priceless gift,
which I could call my own.
I took the gift from out His hand,
but as I would depart,
I cried, “But Lord, this is a thorn
and it has pierced my heart.
This is a strange, a hurtful gift
that Thou hast given me.
He said, “My child, I give good gifts
and give my best to thee.”
I took it home and though at first,
the cruel thorn hurt sore;
As long years passed I learned at last
to love it more and more.
I learned He never gives a thorn
without this added grace.
He takes the thorn to pin aside . . .
the veil which hides His face.

    Debra,
Thanks so much for sharing this! I know this has been such a difficult year for you, and it had to be so painful to share so openly what you have been going through. Nonetheless, THANK YOU! In my circle of friends, we have been discussing the need in the church to be transparent with each other and share each others burdens – completely! That means someone has to open up about their life. This can be scary, especially in such a public way. I’m so proud of you for doing this. Keep us posted. There are many who desire to pray for you, and want to know how you are doing.
